Elsie Legendre Taylor was born on May 5, 1921 in Thibodaux, LA and grew up in the small rural area known as St. John with 10 siblings. In 1943, she graduated from SLI (ULL today) with a B.A. in Education. While at SLI (ULL), she met and later married her college sweetheart, James E. Taylor who proceeds her in death. They were married for 59 years and traveled all throughout America and abroad. Because James was in the United States Navy for over 25 years, she was afforded the opportunity to work as a teacher in Maryland, Alaska, the Philippines, and lastly, spent 25 years with the Lafourche Parish School System where she taught fifth grade Social Studies, most of which was at South Thibodaux Elementary School (formerly C.M. Washington and now changed back) until her retirement. She was an active member of the Louisiana Teachers Retirement Association and the Lafourche Parish Retired Teachers Association. She was also honored to receive the DAR's Outstanding History Teacher Award.
Elsie was a devout practicing Catholic and a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. There she was an active member in her church parish and would serve as a Eucharist Minister and a member of the choir, as well as the Ladies Altar Society. Due to her devotion to our Blessed Mother, she faithfully prayed the rosary several times daily and was a lifetime member of the Marian Servants of the Word where she attended numerous bible studies.
In the community, Elsie was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the choir of Magnificat, Delta Kappa Gamma, and several ladies’ auxiliary organizations: Thibodaux Memorial Post, VFW, and America Legion. Her love of music and beautiful soprano voice afforded her the opportunity to sing for numerous weddings and funerals as well as all the homes for the aged in Thibodaux.
Elsie loved the Lord, interaction with her family, her country, music, football, traveling, shopping, and going to casinos. She now rests in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, singing in His heavenly choir (probably harmony) and will be missed by her family, her students, her fellow educators, and her community.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation for all the outpouring of love and support from family and friends (too numerous to mention all) but especially to Viola Andras for always being there for Ms. Elsie, and in particular we would like to acknowledge and thank the Lafourche Council on Aging & staff especially Meals on Wheels, The Claiborne & staff, the Lafourche Home for the Aged & staff, St. Catherine’s Hospice & staff, Dr. James Soignet & staff, Dr. Elias & staff, Dr, Deibold & staff, Dr. Guidry & staff, Ordoyne Funeral Home & staff, and lastly but not least, Dione Breaux (her granddaughter) who unselfishly gave of her time without complaint to assist in the physical and emotional needs of her Meme and greatly assisted in her transition from this world to Our Father’s Kingdom so beautifully, with comfort and dignity.
