Obituary for Edsel Joseph Aucoin, MD

Edsel “Doc” Aucoin, born August 8, 1939, native of Vacherie, died at his home surrounded by his wife and children on March 3, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Felix L. Aucoin, Jr. and Winnie Waguespack Aucoin; his brothers, Van Aucoin and Kenneth Aucoin; his sisters in law, Connie Aucoin, Rita Aucoin; and brother in law Peter Hobson.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, D’Anne Loden Aucoin, and his four children, Liese Aucoin (Jason Homer), Buddy Aucoin (Jennifer), Justin Aucoin, and Danielle Berry (Charlie); his brothers, Paul Aucoin, Leonard Aucoin (Karla), and Ralph Aucoin (Keiren); sister Jeanne Aucoin Hobson; and sister-in-law Heidi Aucoin and Erin Aucoin.

Edsel attended Wallace School, St. Stanislaus, Georgetown University, and Tulane University School of Medicine. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a first lieutenant and worked as a flight surgeon during the Vietnam War. He was most proud of his time spent on the USS Oriskany and the time he spent as a flight surgeon for the Blue Angels. He was stationed in San Diego in 1973, where he met his future wife on his first day in town. In 1978, Edsel left active duty and began a fellowship in colorectal surgery. He pursued exclusively the private practice of colorectal surgery where he served the San Diego community for twenty years. He was affectionately known as “Doctor Ed” by his friends and patients, for whom he cared deeply.

In 1997, Edsel retired from medical practice and returned to his family home in Vacherie. In 2000, Edsel and D’Anne purchased DJ’s Grille, where he spent most days sitting at his table chatting with his customers, all of whom became his friends. He especially loved his daily lunches with his restaurant family.

Edsel loved hunting, from big game to prairie dogs, and was able to bring his sons to Africa twice for safari hunts. He also had great affection for decaf coffee with two Splendas, diet Coke, ham sandwiches, bananas, and Spider Solitaire.

Edsel’s greatest pride and joy were his eleven grandchildren, who he adored and who adored him equally. He will always be Papa to Kelsey, Cameryn, Michael, Madison, Emma, Gabrielle, Justin, Christian, Olivia, Dominic, and Winnie. They were his greatest joy and he spent as much time as he could with each of them, making sure each felt that they were his favorite.

He is also survived by his eight cousins with whom he grew up: Gayle, Jo Ann, Sharla, Gordon, Jean, Michael, George, and Marie; and many, many, nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Phillip Catholic Church in Vacherie on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 1pm. Visitation will be from 10:30am until 12:30pm at his home. Please adhere to social distancing and mask guidelines.
